Mental Health in Construction
Mental Health training in Construction. Why is it a critical part of training in 2023?
Candid Construction Scotland and The Tigers Group have recently collaborated to complete a mental health and wellbeing course as part of the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) accreditation delivered by David Howie, from The Tigers Group.
This training is essential for the construction industry because it supports a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, including addressing mental health and wellbeing.
The construction sector is recognised for its high-pressure workplace, long work hours, and physically demanding job. These elements can have a substantial impact on workers' mental and physical wellbeing and consequently, that of their families. According to studies, the suicide rate among construction workers in Scotland is greater than in any other industry, with one in every four suicides in Scotland involving a person in the construction business.
To build a safer and more productive workplace, the construction industry is taking notice and prioritising mental health and wellbeing. Candid Construction Scotland has improved its SSSTS accreditation and armed some of its staff with the knowledge and skills to prioritise mental health and wellbeing in the workplace by partnering with The Tigers Group, a leading provider of health and wellness training for the construction sector.
The Tigers Group's course covers a variety of themes related to mental health and welfare, such as stress management, resilience, and self-help approaches. Our team got a better awareness of the importance of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, as well as the warning signals of mental health concerns, by attending this training.
Addressing mental health issues in the workplace is critical for worker health and safety. It can boost productivity, lower absenteeism, and boost employee morale. It can also lower the likelihood of accidents and injuries in the construction business, as workers are more attentive and focused on the task at hand.
It's also worth noting that mental health problems can impact anyone, and it's critical to remove the stigma associated with mental health in the workplace. This entails fostering a secure and supportive workplace in which employees may discuss their mental health and seek help if necessary.
Candid Construction Scotland's partnership with The Tigers Group has allowed us to promote mental health and wellbeing in the workplace and create a safer and more supportive environment for our employees. We believe that this investment in our team will have a positive impact on our business and the wider construction industry and help reduce the alarming rates of suicide among construction workers in Scotland.
